Finding Characters

Tried sketching my characters again. I was thinking of going full color. But now I’m wondering if I should limit the look of my pages to at most 2 to 3 colors.

Still trying to find my ending. My foreseeable number of pages has doubled from our initial proposal. Urk! But gotta keep going. 😛

Book Format & Structure

The format of our book has changed somewhat since we finally got a chance to talk. Ultimately, we think it’s for the better. The book can now be flipped and read from either end. Aside from our respective stories, we are currently designing a game that will be included in the package where readers cut out specially prepared images of our main characters and play a little game. 🙂

Isabel and Nina

Isabel is 7 years old and Nina is 6.

Isabel is all prim and proper, with her hair always tied into a pony tail and not a strand out of place. Her movements are elegant and refined and her sentences are almost measured and crisp. She never throws a tantrum and often seems older than her years. That is, except when she’s with her cousin Nina, who’s like a sister to her.

Nina is the firebrand. Always active, hair tousled with a voice that can shriek and scare even a banshee. Funny thing is, you wouldn’t think it because of her slight frame. Nina loves pictures and images and fills her time drawing on paper and even on the walls of their house (much to the irritation of her parents.) Isabel on the other hand is all about reading and the power of words. The two girls couldn’t be more different but when they’re together they just fit.

Their adventures during the summer of their visit to their Lolo (grandfather) brings them in conflict with the ancient Nuno. A creature of the nether realms who lives in termite hill. The Nuno is extremely territorial and is often known to bring misery and injury to whoever disturbs his peace or trespass in his realm.

What follows in their encounter is a series of games that the Nuno will use to toy with the two girls who happen to trespass into his realm.

Philippine Games: Langit, Lupa, Impyerno (Heaven, Earth, Hell)

Langit-lupa

It starts with chant by a ring of children gathered on a lawn or backyard. A designated child begins the rhyme:

Langit, lupa, impyerno
Im-im-impyerno
Saksak puso
tulo ang dugo
Patay, buhay
Maalis ka na diyaan.

Loose English Translation:
Heaven, Earth, Hell
Hell-Hell-Hell-Hell-Hell
Stab the heart
Out comes blood
Dead, Alive
And out you go.

With each syllable, the designate points to a player in the group until finally the rhyme finishes and with the last syllable, the “taya” or the “it” is chosen.

A mad scramble ensues as the remaining players search for elevated ground which is “Langit” or Heaven. Here the It cannot go and the player cannot be touched. The unfortunate player who is caught and tagged standing on “Lupa” or the the level earth becomes the new “It”. Then the running and tagging begins again.

The game ends when the sweat soaked children have had enough or their mothers call them in for supper.

Card Tower… what happens next

Remember the previous post… one of the boy built a card tower and entered the main gate… I reminds me of Alice in Wonderland, Beyond the Mirror… On the other side, the castle recalls dragons, knights and princesses… all mixed together…
